I think this is the series where we really see that disintegrate,” Heughan said, per Express. “I think, you know, Jamie and Claire have spent a lot of time building this community. Episodes ending on cliffhangers aren't as weighty when the day is always saved.RELATED: ‘Outlander’ Sam Heughan Reflects on Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Grotesque’ First Impression Ahead of Season 6 When people are in danger and saved repeatedly, you get fatigued. They kept it interesting with twists like switching to Jamie's perspective for an episode and teaming Claire up with Jenny (their partnership was the best), but overall, it was wearing. Then, it was about rescuing her from the English - on more than one occasion - and then the witch trial, and then it was Jamie's turn to be rescued. At first, it was about Claire getting back to Craigh na Dun. The goalposts changed along with the locations and cast, and it mostly worked. The costumes by Terry Dresbach, the music by Bear McCreary, and production design by Jon Gary Steele were top notch and contributed immensely to pulling you into Claire and Jamie's world. Scotland's sweeping vistas added an epic quality to the story, as did the period setting. Sam Heughan in OutlanderThe location was also a character of its own. Menzies handled his roles splendidly and did a particularly marvelous job making Jack an utterly horrific and disturbing villain. Heughan did the same with Jamie, bringing together his earnestness and ferocity seamlessly. Her performance of the complex character let the audience truly connect and go on the journey with Claire. She continually conveyed Claire's compassion, stubbornness, and vulnerability. Balfe was in damn near every scene of the series, and she never faltered. The talent the supporting cast brought to each scene helped make the whole bouncing around thing more smooth. Gary Lewis brought hard-edged intensity to Colum MacKenzie, Laura Donnelly's no-nonsense portrayal of Jenny Fraser was remarkable, and Lotte Verbeek made Geillis Duncan a sympathetic character. Balfe and Heughan and their chemistry was key to success as was Tobias Menzies's dual roles as Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall, but many others delivered memorable performances. For the most part, the actors who brought the roles to life will be who I picture when go back to the pages (Arthur Duncan was too much of a caricature).
Your mileage will vary, but I found the casting choices to be spot on. If you've read the book of the same name by Diana Gabaldon, you probably went into the show with certain images of the characters in your head. On the surface, meeting new faces all the time seems like a disadvantage but fostering attachment to the characters and story despite that hurdle meant it was one of the show's strengths.Ĭaitriona Balfe in OutlanderAnother of Outlander's assets is its cast. The jumps around Scotland meant the supporting cast rotated regularly. Claire and Jamie's connection was the constant in a plot that moved from location to location without ever settling for long. Besides the obvious transition from the 1940s to the 1740s, the story kept moving. The series continually evolved and changed. And while we're on the subject of romance, Outlander took a different and welcome approach to sex and the female gaze. While their love for each other dictated where the plot went, it didn't crowd everything else out if that makes sense. It wasn't really introduced in a big way until the seventh episode, "The Wedding", though and then the bond between Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) was at the heart of the story. I can't say whether the 16 episodes of Season 1 changed any minds, but I can say the series successfully wove together various arcs, tones, and development to address those concerns and to show Outlander has a wide range. Some groups wrote the time-traveling, historical fiction tale off as romance and nothing more, while others were concerned about a plot centering on a woman torn between two marriages. Starz's Outlander had some preconceptions to overcome before the first episode aired.
